Plans are underway in the Shoalhaven district to immortalise Australia’s inaugural Melbourne Cup winner, Archer, with a statue. Archer (William Tell – Maid Of The Oaks, by Vagabond) won the Melbourne Cup in 1861, and again in 1862, and was trained by Etienne de Mestre at his farm, Terrara, just out of Nowra. The planned statue will be of Archer being led by his trainer, Etienne de Mestre, and ridden by his regular jockey, John Cutts.

Archer arrived at Terrara for training as a three year-old, and was quickly nicknamed “the bull” by locals.
