The most recent horse to win both the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup and Gr.1 Melbourne Cup in the same season, NZ bred racemare Ethereal (Rhythm-Romanee Conti, by Sir Tristram) was captured in bronze by artist Michelle Farrell for owner-breeder Pencarrow Stud. Only eleven horses have managed this feat since the Caulfield Cup was first run in 1879 (Melbourne Cup is older dating back to 1861).

Ethereal is a daughter of one of Pencarrow Stud’s foundation mares, Romanee Conti (Sir Tristram), herself an excellent racemare. Romanee Conti won seven races in Australia, Hong Kong, and New Zealand, including the Hong Kong International Cup, Sydney’s Queen of the Turf Stakes, and was also multiple times Gr.1 placed in races like the Queen Elizabeth Randwick Stakes, Thorndon Mile, and WRC Telegraph Handicap. In her third season at stud, she was sent to Cambridge Stud’s shuttle stallion Rhythm (Mr. Prospector- Dance Number, by Northern Dancer), and produced a bay filly in 1997.
