One of the most poignant statues in horse racing is the Fallen Jockeys statue. The original, created by Jennifer Mann, was installed at Caulfield Racecourse in 2004. A copy was later installed at Royal Randwick Racecourse in 2014. The sculpture is a slightly larger than life-sized bronze of jockey Hugh Cairns, who is one of nearly one thousand jockeys to die in Australia since 1847.

John H Payne’s 2017 book “Their Last Ride” has extensive research into this topic and has the obituaries of nearly 950 jockeys who have been identified as having died in Australia, both on race-day and in training accidents.
