Octagonal (Zabeel-Eight Carat, by Pieces of Eight) is the only Australian Horse of the Year to sire an Australian Horse of the Year, and yet it wasn’t his stallion ability that had the whole country in awe of him. Known as The Big O, Octagonal wowed crowds with his finishing speed and toughness.

The black colt was first seen on the racetrack on the third of December 1994, where he easily won the STC Leopardstown 2YO Handicap over 1100m. Set aside until autumn, Octagonal showed his debut win was no fluke in winning the Gr.2 Todman Slipper Trial, before a race that many say cemented him as something special – the 1995 Gr.1 Golden Slipper.
